Crumpled 2000
For Crumpled, Gideon Obarzanek’s trademark black humour, palpable eroticism and rapid-fire virtuosity was in full effect, featuring dancers Fiona Cameron, Sarah-Jayne Howard, David Tyndall and Nicole Johnston. Crumpled featured a series of what Obarzanek termed 'calculated collisions' by the dancers (including Obarzanek himself), set to a score of random electronic sounds and samples. By dropping and lifting the proscenium curtain throughout the work, Obarzanek transformed the stage into a self-contained world, suggesting the dance continued independently of the viewers’ seeing it.
Combination #3 drew together three exciting contemporary choreographers. Japan’s extraordinary choreographer Kim Itoh and Australia’s Phillip Adams joined Chunky Move’s Artistic Director and choreographer Gideon Obarzanek to create this new triple-bill. Combination #3was performed at the National Theatre in St Kilda from Friday, October 20 as part of the 2000 Melbourne Festival.
