Nether 2018
The 11th incarnation of Chunky Move's vital Next Move commissioning program featured two new works choreographed and performed by dancers Lauren Langlois and Joel Bray. In an absurd vision of a future that’s hurtling towards us, Lauren Langlois and James Vu Anh Pham presented physicality as the last vestige of what it means to be human. Nether was a hybrid of contemporary dance and physical theatre, inviting audiences to enter an exhilarating visceral labyrinth where the metahuman, memory, and technological obsessions collide. Using non-linear narrative techniques, Nether was a response to a society that puts constraints on us, where dystopian worlds meet frenzied dance, asking the body in crisis to explore the subtleties of human existence. What happens when our humanity is stripped bare and all we are left with is embodiment?

“Nether is a highly polished work that displays a compressed economy in its choreographic language. The dancers are outstanding, and the entire vision draws the viewer in to an easy suspension of disbelief.” Dance Australia
