Redshift 2017

5

In cosmology, redshift is a way of describing our relative distance to an object in space. With this work marking the 10th anniversary of Chunky Move's Next Move program, choreographer James Batchelor wanted to inspire curiosity and invited audiences to think about dance as a conversation, a collaboration and exchange with other discipline and communities. Batchelor's invitation was to consider the mysterious lure of the unknown, and the impulse that drives humans to turn their attention to alien spaces, be it the depths of the ocean, the darkness of outer space, or the strange and unknown thing that is another person. Drawing on the experiences he had during a sub-Antarctic expedition with 60 scientists, students and artists, REDSHIFT was science as performance, conducted in movement.
