BONANZA! is a playful blend of dance/ film/ digital animation/ artist dialogue, filmed in Alpha60’s Chapter House. Created by Harrison Hall, Sam Mcgilp and Justin Kane, BONANZA! is ArtxDialogue with guests NAXS Corp (Taiwan) and Lu Yang (China). An uneasy meeting of nostalgic-futurism, BONANZA! is a lament for our physical bodies and an exaltation of digital reincarnation.

ACTIVATORS 3 is curated by Leah Landau as part of Chunky Move’s ACTIVATORS Program

ACTIVATORS  is a series of free public events curated by Chunky Move Artistic Director Antony Hamilton and independent choreographer and curator Leah Landau.  The  ACTIVATORS  program invites independent artists to apply choreographic approaches and principles to ideas such as site, space, time, and material, keeping the body at the centre of their investigation.  The resulting hybrid events may involve elements of performance, installation, discussion, and/or demonstration, and will feature artists whose work plays a role in shaping and influencing conversations in society and culture.

ACTIVATORS  is supported by the City of Melbourne Arts Grants Program and presented in partnership with organisations including MPavilion, Science Gallery Melbourne, Alpha60/Chapter House and ACCA.

Statement from Leah Landau

In May this year, I invited Harrison to present his current interests through Expanded Practice at Alpha60’s Chapter House.

Expanded Practice (a term I have borrowed from Agnes Quakles of BUDA, Kortrijk) is an experimental platform. An artist is asked to identify features of their practice – current questions, key practitioners, atmospheres, materials – and allow these features to expand and mutate, ending in some form of presentation to the public. Harrison worked with these principles together with collaborators Sam Mcgilp and Justin Kane.

Unlike a contemporary dance film or a performance lecture, BONANZA! is a collision of movement, interviews and conversations around dance and the body in virtual realms. Reformed as a space, the body now enters endless uploads; idealised, dissolved and re-born in illusionary rituals.

This virtual cycle is a practice in itself. What sort of kinship emerges in data, in the recycle? Does fleshy data, in twisting free-fall of hyperconnectivity (person-as-virtual person, virtual person-as-virtual space, virtual space-as-new continuity) ever stick, form new relationships: sediments? What sorts of slack (or estrangement) could occur in this archeology of data, a labyrinth which we are always already inside of?
